Experience a 9-day safari in Kenya

Overview

Discover the magic of Kenya through an unforgettable safari. Kenya is much more than a tourist destination; it is synonymous with adventure, wild nature and landscapes that evoke the pages of "Out of Africa", the iconic work of Baroness Karen Blixen (also known as Isak Dinesen), which captivated the world in the film of the same name starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.

Immerse yourself in the authenticity of the Reteti safari, whose name pays homage to the Samburu people. In their language, Reteti means "fig tree", the sacred tree that holds a special place in their beliefs. This experience will take us to explore natural gems such as the Masai Mara and Samburu, the impressive Rift Valley reserves, along with the Aberdare Mountains, Lake Nakuru National Park and the vast plains of Loita, home to the fascinating Masai ethnic group.

Experience the essence of Kenya through this unique journey, where nature, culture and history intertwine to offer you an unforgettable safari experience. Embark on this adventure and be captivated by the beauty of Kenya in every corner you explore.

Itinerary:

We will land in Kenya, specifically at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. After completing immigration formalities and collecting our luggage, we will meet our guide, who will be waiting with a sign bearing the travelers’ names. This city, located 1,700 meters above sea level, was founded at the beginning of the century as a stopover for the railway connecting Mombasa with Kampala (Uganda). The pleasant climate and abundant water supply quickly turned it into a major population center. Transfer to the hotel.

We will head to Samburu National Reserve, located in the north of the country and right in the heart of Samburu territory. This reserve is situated north of Laikipia, a protected area of arid plains and acacia forests, and one of the best places for safaris in Kenya.

Includes

Lodging

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We will spend the day on a safari and also visit the Reteti Elephant Rehabilitation Center. For decades, elephants have been victims of poaching for their ivory and have lost much of their habitat due to land use for farming and other human activities, making them an increasingly endangered species.

At this center, we’ll see the efforts being made to protect them, as well as the rehabilitation of other animals that have also been victims of attacks. Later, we’ll go on a safari through this spectacular reserve. The Ewaso Ngiro River runs through it and attracts countless animals to its banks. It is easy to spot elephants and other mammals drinking from its waters. The reserve is also home to more than 400 species of birds, including migratory species that arrive with the rains in November.

We’ll head to the Aberdare Mountains, a long, forested mountain range. Established in 1950, it is a national park and the highest-altitude nature reserve in all of Africa. With its impressive jungle, it is home to numerous species of mammals, including lions, antelopes, and buffalo. We may also see a large colony of black rhinos.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We will head to Lake Nakuru National Park. We will arrive at noon and have lunch at the hotel, after which we will go on our first safari in the area. Lake Nakuru is one of the world’s greatest birding paradises. Surrounded by forests of yellow-trunked thorny acacias and candelabra euphorbias, its appeal lies not only in the more than 450 different species of birds that inhabit it, but also in the various families of mammals that coexist in perfect harmony with this aquatic landscape: waterbucks, warthogs, baboons, topi, giraffes, and big cats such as leopards and lions. But what this small lake is best known for are the pink flamingos that inhabit its waters. These beautiful birds find their favorite food at the bottom of the lake, which also gives them their pink coloration.

In the morning, we will head towards the Loita plains to get in contact with a Masai village and learn about their customs, traditions and curiosities. The Masai tribe is one of the best known for its dances, warriors and brightly colored cloth, usually red and checkered. The Maasai women wear a variety of colorful beaded necklaces and beads. Their houses, known as "manyatas", are built with excrement, mud and straw. Although their life revolves around livestock, it should not be forgotten that the Maasai are an ancient warrior tribe with a markedly hierarchical organization around ages and groups of men. This will be the time to get to know them closely. The order and characteristics of the activities with the Maasai during this day and the following day may vary.

We will wake up in Masai territory and learn more about their culture before changing our route. Our route will take us to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Along the way we will enjoy fantastic views and a wonderful scenery full of wildlife. Located in Masai territory, this park is also named after the river that runs through it: the Mara. Unlike most of the rivers of the African savannah, the Mara has a permanent flow throughout the year, concentrating in its vicinity wildlife populations that are one of the main attractions of the area. In the afternoon we will go on safari.

A day of safari where we will continue to observe wildlife within the Masai Mara National Reserve—undoubtedly Kenya’s most remarkable and renowned reserve. Its vast size (which extends into Tanzania until it meets the Serengeti National Park) and strict anti-poaching measures have created a safe habitat for its large population of big cats. The reserve is famous, in particular, for its lion population and for being home to endangered species such as the black rhinoceros. The most popular animals on a safari (lion, leopard, African elephant, African buffalo, and black rhinoceros) inhabit the Masai Mara. However, the park’s most numerous inhabitants, just as in Tanzania’s Serengeti, are the wildebeest and the zebra. During a specific time of year (between July and September), the Great Migration can be seen in this park—a natural phenomenon whose dates vary depending on the weather and the onset of rains, during which thousands upon thousands of wildebeests and zebras traverse the plains of these national parks in search of food and water. There is the opportunity to enjoy the sunset from a hilltop, a small elevation where we’ll have unique views. A dreamlike landscape that we’ll enjoy while savoring a snack, an activity that varies depending on the accommodation where we’re staying. This is what we call a sundowner (activity not included), undoubtedly a service highly appreciated by travelers.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We’ll wake up to a unique setting and then head to Nairobi for lunch at a local restaurant (not included). Free afternoon. Farewell dinner (or lunch, depending on flight times) to round out our trip, and at the agreed-upon time, transfer to the airport for our return flight.
