Sonsón is a charming Antioquian municipality located 95 km from Medellín. Its history and outstanding republican architecture are some of the attractions of this municipality, recognized in the region for its beautiful balconies.
The most beautiful thing about Sonsón is being able to enjoy its landscapes of mountains, moors and rivers, which makes it ideal for ecological and adventure tourism. Sonsón can be visited all year round, but from the beginning of June to the end of August are times when you can get a little more sun. Walking through its streets is to encounter 200 years of history, which have been vital for the growth of Antioquia.
IMPORTANT:
For the trip it is necessary to bring warm clothes (at night it gets cold), bathing suit, mosquito repellent and shoes for walking in the countryside. Sonsón is located two and a half hours from the city of Medellín on the Las Palmas road and our recommended route to get there is:
- Departure at 7:00 am via Las Palmas to La Ceja.
- Make the first stop for breakfast, we love to eat on the road.
- Continue to Sonsón, because there is a lot to see. This town is not very crowded with visitors and is perfect for ecotourism, enjoy its mountains, moors and history.
You will arrive at the main park of the town, where our local guide will be waiting for you, where he will tell you a little of the history of the town and then take you for a walk through the streets.
Historical Center and Museum Network of Sonsón (Duration 6 hours):
Sonsón is the cradle of the Antioquian colonization, it keeps in its streets colonial, republican and contemporary architecture; as well as a series of cultural assets in which the Museum Network of Sonsón is located with six spaces of different themes.
In this tour you will visit the following museums: Religious Art "Tiberio de J. Salazar y Herrera" and its Rómulo Carvajal room, the Casa de los Abuelos "Folkloric Museum" and its Sonsón Archaeological Room and the Pablo Jaramillo Museum of contemporary ceramic art; you will also visit the most beautiful balcony of Antioquia, parish churches, squares, monuments, handicraft stores and typical gastronomy.
Depending on time availability, you can visit other museums, such as the Corn Festival Museum, the Roberto Jaramillo Arango House Museum of Culture and the San José de Sonsón Cemetery Park Museum. The tour is complemented with a visit to ancestral trades such as the production of ruanas, the forge and saddlery.
Then in the evening you will have free time to enjoy the park and share with the local people.

Mirador del Páramo Viewpoint Route (Duration 3 hours)
Sector of the central mountain range and pilgrimage site that was inaugurated in 1933 with its bronze Christ and the Stations of the Cross; a place of great beauty surrounded by cloud forests at an altitude of over 2800 meters above sea level. This sector is known for its delicious cuisine, which highlights the arepa de chocolo with cheese and sandwich, accompanied by chocolate or panela water; also the traditional cuisine of the Rio Arriba sector on the road leading to the viewpoint. On this route there are other places of interest that you can visit such as the Parque Recreativo la Pinera, the headquarters of the Universidad de Antioquia and different stores to enjoy local products. This route is mostly done using vehicular transportation so it is suitable for all types of public, including children and seniors, since it does not generate greater physical effort. The route to the Páramo de Sonsón viewpoint takes place on the road that leads to the municipalities of Argelia and Nariño, the old Medellín - Bogotá road. The viewpoint is located 9.5 km away.
Higuera Agrarian Route (Duration 6 hours)
The agro-tourist route begins in the urban area of the municipality, traveling 40 minutes to the Alto de Sabanas district. This is an experiential tour through crops that create a unique landscape; you can learn and practice the process of planting, harvesting, washing and packing the fruit of the nopal (fig), together with the kindness of its growers; also, you will have panoramic views of the Arma River canyon, the municipality of Aguadas - Caldas, Abejorral and the Farallones del Citará (western mountain range). Approximately 40 minutes from the urban area of the town is the village of Alto de Sabanas, a hamlet surrounded by a unique cultural landscape in the country for its fig crops.
Santa Monica Route (Duration 4 hours)
You will start this route from the Historic Center of Sonsón, passing by the municipal cemetery and then you will find a road surrounded by peasant landscapes, waterfalls, the bridge of Santa Monica (historic road to Honda - Tolima where muleteers and mules entered progress to the town), the granite stone quarry with stories of the construction of the Cathedral of the Diocese of Sonsón - Rionegro, which although no longer there, still inhabits the collective imagination of the sonsoneños. Following the road, you will find the Santa Monica waterfall, which has crystal clear waters that come from the moor and cross the mountainous topography, in this place you will enjoy a delicious bath.
Norí Route (Duration 6 hours)
The tour begins moving by vehicle to the village of Norí (16 kms of travel), then after a typical breakfast of the region, you will begin the walk, in which you can observe water sources, regenerating forests, cloud forests and paramo transition with species of flora and fauna unique to these ecosystems and of great importance, due to its function to regulate and conserve the water resource. This place shelters more than 60 species of birds, about 12 species of orchids, amphibians, mosses and other natural treasures that you can observe during this tour.
Yarumal Route (Duration 6 hours)
The tour starts from the urban area of the municipality, taking the road that leads to the municipality of Aguadas in the department of Caldas, in this sector you will make a circuit through the villages of Yarumal la escuela and Yarumal Altavista, where you can observe the agricultural and livestock production sector of the municipality of Sonsón in the cold climate zone. During the tour, you can appreciate various crops such as avocado, corn, potatoes, peas, beans, among others, and livestock species such as cattle, pigs, trout and poultry. The location of these trails in the area near the Paramo de Sonson, will allow you to observe different species of great ecological interest and crystal clear waterfalls of great beauty.
Murringo Road Route (Duration 7 hours)
In this tour you will visit the Paramo de Sonson, a fragment of jungle that has been used for planting various agricultural products, you will walk along the cobblestone that is in the middle of the road, which is a great work of art and infrastructure, due to its form of snake scales and by which mules and farmers travel to get in and out of the villages of La Capilla and Murringo in the village of Rioverde de los Montes. The crossing of this road will take you to the viewpoint from where you will be able to observe the morro de la Vieja, the Murringo trail and other trails of the town of Rioverde de los Montes; you will also see the great and imposing valley of the Magdalena Medio and the river that crosses the horizon.
After arriving back to the center of Sonsón, we recommend you to start the return trip to Medellín. It is a good option to have lunch at a restaurant along the way, such as Buenavista Dairy, which sells delicious dairy products that you can buy to take home.
