Barranquilla: Carnival, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with Andrea Vivero

Barranquilla Colombia

Barranquilla is known for being the birthplace of the second most important carnival in the world. In 2003, UNESCO declared it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. But Barranquilla offers much more.

Fleeing from World War II, Italian, Lebanese, French, Chinese immigrants arrived at the dock of Puerto Colombia... They did not come alone, they were accompanied by their culture, folklore, food, handicrafts..., and thanks to this Barranquilla was transformed into a multicultural, welcoming and joyful place, where cumbia floods the streets and turns everyone's life into a smile in the form of rhythm.

Birdwatching enthusiasts can enjoy their hobby in the Metropolitan Park of the River and the Malecon, next to the Magdalena River. Green areas where a multitude of local and migratory birds can be spotted.

Brief introduction to the history of Barranquilla

The history of Barranquilla dates back to pre-Columbian times, inhabited by indigenous groups. During the Spanish colonization, it was established as a small settlement. In the 19th century, it became an important river port and commercial center thanks to the tobacco, coffee and sugar cane trade.

The railroad boom in the 19th century boosted its growth as a center of transportation and commerce. In the twentieth century, it consolidated its position as the most important city on the Colombian Caribbean coast, highlighted by the Barranquilla Carnival. Today, it is a modern and dynamic city, recognized for its cultural diversity and diversified economy.

The Carnival of Barranquilla

If you're in town in February, don't miss Carnival, a unique cultural experience filled with music, dance, costumes and folkloric traditions. It is a colorful and vibrant celebration that represents the very essence of Colombian Caribbean culture. With a rich and deep-rooted history, it is considered one of the largest and most exciting carnivals in the world.

The origin of Carnival dates back to the pre-Columbian festivities of the indigenous people and merges with the African traditions brought by the slaves, as well as with the Catholic celebrations introduced by the Spanish colonizers. These influences combined to create a unique celebration that reflects the diversity and joy of the people of Barranquilla.

Barranquilla Carnival is celebrated for four days, just before Lent, and is filled with music, dance, costumes and parades. Among the main attractions are the comparsas, cumbiambas, extravagant costumes and parades of floats, which fill the streets of the city with a festive and contagious atmosphere.

The highlight of the Carnival is the Battle of Flowers, a parade of floats adorned with flowers and colorful figures through the streets of Barranquilla. Other important events include the Gran Parada de Tradición, the Festival de Orquestas and the Noche de Guacherna.
